Introduction to the School

1407 Graymalkin Lane, Salem Center, Westchester County, NY. Also known as Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters.

It was the site of hope for dozens of students built upon the bones of a lonely childhood. Two times the school had been opened. The first attempt had been destroyed by the war and by the patriotism (or recruitment) of students and teachers who felt they were doing what was right. The second attempt would prove to be more successful, run by a headmaster who had regained his own hope.

The school, the home, was no longer a place of loneliness. Instead, there were children almost always on the move, fluttering down from the top floor, walking through walls, or just appearing with a loud Bamf. There were darker things at the school, of course. Nightmares that could boil the walls of a room if left unchecked and homesickness, sometimes for homes that had rejected them. But there were also adults who mentored these children. Pain and heartache may have still been in the house, but so too were companionship and support.

It was an air that the teachers deliberately tried to invoke since many of them hadn’t had it in their own childhoods. They’d had to hide or were hidden or were even persecuted just for being who they were. It was the teachers who had all decided that they would try to make the lives of the children easier than their own.

But that didn’t come without a cost. There were layers beneath the school, layers where some of the students were trained to protect themselves and others and to fight. The world might have seen mutants in a different light after Mystique’s rescue ten years ago, but they’d also seen what Magneto could do. Mutants might have finally been in the light, but they still weren’t always safe and that was where the X-Men came in. Hoping for a better future, but also preparing for a worse one.

And that was really what Xavier’s was: a refuge and a place to forge the next generation of mutants, ones who wouldn’t have to live in the darkness their forefathers had. And it was up to their teachers to make sure they were ready for that future.

Charles

If there was a positive to come from what happened with Nur, because Charles refused to call him Apocalypse, even though that was what he was, it gave him, or the memory of him too much power over the students that now resided here. He could find mutants without the aid of Cerebro, because frankly, Charles didn't care if he ever saw that room again.

Unlike Nur, Charles knew what power he now held and carefully guarded against using it without cause. His mental shields were impenetrable, and he only allowed people to see what he wanted them to see. He hadn't quite managed lying to Raven at all, so he let his guard down around her, because frankly it was tiring.

He was so unbelievably proud of what they had accomplished together, and he wasn't afraid to tell her.

Charles was upstairs pretending to be asleep when he felt her move. He had general feelers out all over the house, mostly for nightmares, but he could tell that Raven was restless. He wheeled himself down to the kitchen, pausing in the archway for a moment, before rolling in.

"Would you like some hot chocolate?" He asked quietly.

Peter

Peter was unhappy, no he was pissed. He was like a nervous ball of energy that had nowhere to go. He hated that his leg was broken, and he couldn't run. He needed to run like most needed air to breathe. He wasn't content like this at all.

He pinched the bridge of his nose as he rested on his crutch. He also knew that he needed to talk to Erik, but he didn't know how to force the words out of his throat. He stubbled his way towards the garden, the greenery always made him think more clearly.

Hank

Hank stood at the window of the library, transformed, his arms crossed over his chest. He was restless. He didn't really like change all that much, but he had promised to give it go for Raven.

She had stayed which had settled Charles and in turn settled him, which was a good thing. He knew that Erik had played a role in saving them all, but he couldn't help but feel unsettled having him here.

He knew that he should let bygones be bygones, but it was hard to rewrite 20 years of pain.

Settling in at the school had proved to be a bit more difficult than he'd imagined; it wasn't that he was uncomfortable at Xavier's, but things from Germany had followed him and the battle with En Sabah Nur had taken it's toll on all of them. Being put on bed-rest after he'd exhausted himself during that fight had been bad, though it wasn't nearly as terrible as being told he couldn't teleport for a few weeks.

At least he could distract himself with schoolwork and reading.

There was a bench that Kurt had somewhat claimed, considering he took it any chance he had free time to come out to the garden and that was currently where he sat, knees drawn to his chest with his book tucked between his hands. Most days, he was left to his own devices, so as he glanced from the corner of his eye at the sound of approaching footsteps, bewilderment overtook his features at the sight of Peter, shuffling along with his broken leg.

For now, he kept quiet, timidness effectively silencing him, regardless of his urge to greet the other mutant.

Raven's not the only restless one.

The blue boy has tried to be mostly discreet about his midnight visits to the kitchen and thankfully, it seemed like other people would sleep during this time of night. He'd been able to slink his way down from his room without disturbing anyone, absently clutching a blanket around his shoulders as he stood in front of the refrigerator door.

There were plenty of things to choose from, but nothing that really caught his attention; he knew he wasn't hungry, but it was something to distract his addled mind from wandering back to the nightmares that had frightened him awake. He leaned in to grab the jug of fruit juice, nudging the door shut with his foot while slithering his tail up to the nearby cabinet for a cup.

It was the sound of footsteps that caught his attention first, making his head lift and whip in the direction of the entrance to the kitchen. He inhaled sharply and waited ... only to be greeted by Raven coming into the room. "Oh," he commented offhandedly, glancing at the container still in his hand, the lid gripped in the other. "Hallo, miss Darkholme."

He finds it no easier to sleep than he did when she knew him before, so finding him wandering around the house in the middle of the night is nothing new.

He doesn't plan on staying too much longer, either. He had never intended to come back permanently. He just doesn't know how to tell anyone that. He can feel Charles' disappointment already.

He's not surprised to see Raven in the kitchen either, truthfully. In fact the only surprising thing about this situation is him going for the coffee, because that's the best option when he has a hard time sleeping.

"Raven."

Erik is down in the garden, just wandering through it, with no particular destination. He just needs some time to clear his head, even though it's been weeks since the events in Egypt. He helped to fix what he could, and now he needs some space away from it all to try and figure out to do about everything he can't fix.

He does want to talk to Peter before he leaves. Peter had reached out to him in Cairo when he'd had no reason to do so, and Erik doesn't know what would have happened if Peter and Raven hadn't done so. So much more that couldn't be fixed, he's sure.

He's almost done with his preparations for leaving, except for a few small things here and there. He knows that Charles wants him to stay, and maybe one day in the future he'll do just that, but for now he needs to be in other places.

He comes into the library to return the book he just finished reading. There's no need for him to disturb Hank in the process, so he doesn't.

Find him anywhere

[personal profile] frankensteinian 2017-01-26 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bit strange to him, to be back in this house after twenty years, especially with everything that has happened in those twenty years. He knows he's always welcome here, even if he hadn't always wanted to be.

Still he knows that he won't be staying this time either, though he's not ruling out coming back at some point. He just has a few things to work through first. Now that the school is up and running, it's time to take his leave. His teaching method won't be missed.

If only he could find a good way of making his intentions known.

At this point, searching the school for Hank has become a normal, everyday sort of thing for him. It usually ended up in the same place each time: the library.

So, Kurt was not surprised to open the door of the room and catch sight of Hank, either distracted with something outside or simply using his position by the window as an excuse to stew in his own thoughts. He shook his head, silently closed the door and padded his way up to stand next to the taller man.

"... lost in thought again, are we?"

"I don't sleep much most nights." She knew that once, but there's no point in bringing that up now. She hasn't forgotten, he knows that, and it really adds nothing to the conversation.

He used to be a lot better at knowing what she was thinking. He misses that. But there's twenty years in between there, twenty years that have changed things. She's not the same person he remembers just as he's not the same one she remembers.

"It's a late night for you too."

He couldn't remember exactly where he'd heard the name, but it stuck in the back of his mind and happened to slip out at the most random moment. Normally, Kurt would have referred to her as 'Mystique' to remain as professional as possible; he wasn't quite sure why that decided to happen right now.

"Raven, ja. I'm sure you aren't as old as you are making yourself out to be."

The lifted eyebrow earned a confused look, brilliantly colored eyes darting from right to left then focusing back on her. Had he done something wrong? Was he standing in her way? He shook his head, finished filling his glass then recapped the juice before returning it to the fridge and shuffling out of the way.

"Probably. I can't seem to sleep, though."

Hank could feel Kurt's presence even before he heard the door close. His shoulders relaxed a fraction, and he smiled just a little bit. Kurt's presence has a calming effect, one he thinks that the younger man surely realizes.

"Yeah, sorry. Are you okay?"

He could easily see the tautness of Hank's shoulders slacken, which made him grin in response. Gazing out the window for a moment, he shook his head and clutched tighter to the book in his arm.

"No reason to apologize. I'm fine," he paused, bit the inside of his cheek then turned his attention to the mutant beside him. "but you don't seem to be."

Charles smiled slightly. "I was just borrowing my Dear," He said, wheeling all the way into the kitchen. He looked around, a little sadly remembering the past, but knowing that the future was now fraught with hope and possibility.

"You aren't my dear, I'm afraid I'm doing that all on my own. Why are you awake?"
